Prothonotary Warbler Singing

Prothonotary Warbler Singing (Tom Wilson/GNPA)

Savannah, GA

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Savannah-Ogeechee Barge Canal is a remnant of an extensive canal system that linked the Savannah and Ogeechee rivers during the 1800s. Today the area is a recreational facility that highlights the natural history of this rich floodplain forest while preserving historic relics from the once-thriving artery of commerce. Visitors can learn about the history of the canal and view remnants of canal locks as well as a replica gate and lock model. The property features 184 acres of river swamp, pine flatwoods and sandhill habitat with low-impact walking trails.

Specialties

Prothonotary warbler, northern parula, Swainson's warbler, wood duck, Mississippi kite, swallow-tailed kite.
